For 18 years prior to joining Mourant Ozannes, Douglas was a barrister at Serle Court in London, specialising in international trust litigation. He was ranked in the top tier for Commercial Chancery work by Chambers & Partners UK and Global 2011 and for Private Client work by Legal 500 2010. He was named Chancery Junior of the Year at the Chambers Bar Awards 2007 and was described by Legal 500 2010 as "the offshore counsel par excellence".

Douglas has a first class post-graduate degree from Oxford University and is recommended in the Citywealth Leaders' List, with Honours, for both contentious and non-contentious trusts. He ceased to practise as a barrister in September 2010 and does not practise as a barrister at Mourant Ozannes.

Before leaving the bar, Douglas was the principal English counsel for Mourant Ozannes' clients in the Jersey cases Mackinnon v Regent Trust Co. Ltd (2004-5) and Re Internine Trust: Alhamrani v Alhamrani (2003-9), amongst others.
