Joel was an in-house counsel with Australia’s largest investment manager, the Commonwealth Bank Group, advising on areas of trust law, superannuation and managed investments for some of Australia’s leading property and superannuation funds. Prior to that, Joel was an associate counsel in the funds and capital markets practice groups of Australian fund manager, Perpetual Investments, working on domestic and international fund and securitisation structures.
Professional qualifications:
Before completing his undergraduate qualification in 2000, Joel also gained four years commercial experience in trust fund administration, risk management and compliance. In October 2003, Joel obtained an LLM Masters degree majoring in commercial law. Joel was admitted to the NSW Supreme Court, Sydney in April 2001.*

Employees Provident Fund
Joel Hernandez acts as the primary Jersey legal advisor to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), in connection with its ongoing £1 billion investment program to acquire commercial property in London. EPF is a Malaysian pension fund with more than 12 million members in Malaysia.
Resource Eastern European Equity Partners I, L.P.
A team led by Joel Hernandez and Ben Robins which included Kerill O'Shaughnessy advised on the Jersey legal aspects of the establishment of Resource Eastern European Equity Partners I, L.P., a private equity fund targeting mid-cap businesses in Poland, as well as in other EU member states in Central and South-Eastern Europe. The fund was established as a Jersey limited partnership and authorised as a Jersey expert fund targeting commitments of up to €200,000,000.
Henderson CLOF II Jersey Property Unit Trust
A team led by Joel Hernandez, including Sophie Travis and Leanne Wallser advised Henderson Global Investors with the Jersey aspects of the establishment of the CLOF II Jersey Property Unit Trust. The fund is a dedicated feeder vehicle for Henderson's Central London Office Fund II which is targeting property investments principally in the City, Midtown and West End London markets. The fund was established as a closed-ended Jersey unit trust and authorised as a Jersey Expert Fund.
Alpha Private Equity Fund 5
Ben Robins and Joel Hernandez advised on the Jersey legal aspects of the establishment of Alpha Private Equity Fund 5 and APEF 5’s subsequent conversion to a Jersey expert fund. APEF 5 is a closed-ended private equity fund with capital commitments of €900 million. APEF 5 invests primarily in expansion and late-stage businesses and businesses permitting leveraged management buy-out structures throughout Europe, with special attention to France, Germany, Italy, Benelux and Switzerland. The team at Mourant Ozannes worked alongside SJ Berwin LLP (Paris) and Ropes & Gray LLP (New York).
